Singapore's March 2008 CPI rose 6.7% on a year on year basis led by a 7.6% rise in food, 8.1% in housing, 7.9% rise on transport & communications and a 7.3% rise in healthcare. Singapore released its advanced Q1-2008 GDP estimate on April 10 with growth of 7.2% year on year and 16.9% quarter on quarter compared to a 4.8% quarter on quarter decline in Q4-2007. Cosco announced that it had won two contracts overnight - a US$131.8mn semi-submersible for an American client and a US$160mn contract from a Danish client for two shuttle tankers. These contracts are in RMB but payment would be in US$ at the prevailing exchange rate at the time of payment.

Fed Chairman Bernanke indicated that the US economy would probably not see any GDP growth this year and might even contract in the first half of 2008 - that means recession but said in a way not to panic the market. This prompted the IMF to cut global growth by 0.4% to 3.7%. Confirming the softness ....

The strength of the US rally overnight was surprising with the Dow higher by 391 and the Nasdaq by 84 points. Financials led the rally with JP Morgan, AIG, American Express and Bank of America alone contributing about one third of the Dow's rally. The trigger for the rally appeared to be the report ....

The US markets closed up marginally yesterday with the Dow higher by 46 and the Nasdaq by 18.
